Social on Business Project
Experiences from Social on Business Project to be used in Governments Business Simplification Programme.
A number of conclusions from the Social on Business project mirror proposals made under the Governments Business Simplification Programme. John Mitchell project manager for the Social on Business project in the South East of England said “it is interesting to note that whilst the initiatives have developed along separate lines a number of findings from the Social on Business project are similar to proposals made for business start-up support for disadvantaged groups contained in the Business Simplification Programme.”
SEEDA have recognised that the experiences gained from the Social on Business Project can make a valuable contribution to the work being carried out with BERR, other agencies, RDA’s and local authorities to develop the outline proposals into working practices. John Mitchell has been asked to be a member of a national working group developing proposals for working practices that will be put to Ministers later this year.
John Mitchell said “it is great to feel the work myself and colleagues from the partner regions did is contributing to Government thinking and improving the opportunities for disadvantaged groups.”
The Business Simplification Programme is about refocusing Government support for Business. Quoting from the Consultation Document issued in June 2007 it was stated: -
“We estimate that there are over 3000 publicly-funded business support schemes available in England. Business tells us they are confused by this array of schemes, which can put them off seeking support. To address this problem we want to simplify business support in England to no more than 100 schemes by 2010 and ensure publicly-funded business support is:
• Simple for business to understand and access;
• Good value for money; and has
• Impact on economic and other public policy goals.”
